A school campus visit is not a social call. It is an evaluation.

Choosing a school based on its website, brochure, or ranking is like choosing a home based on the estate agent's description. The description may be accurate. It may also be selective. The only way to truly know what a school is like for the children who attend it every day is to visit the campus in person, with your eyes open and the right questions ready.
Here are 15 specific things to observe and check during every school campus visit — whether you are visiting Prachin Global School or any other CBSE school in Hyderabad.
📌

Before You Arrive — Prepare Your Visit

Book the visit in advance. Bring your child if they are old enough — their instinctive reaction to the campus is data. Prepare your questions in advance. Arrive a few minutes early so you can observe the campus before the formal presentation begins.

How Students Behave When No One is Watching

The best indicator of school culture is not the showcased achievements on the walls — it is how students interact with each other, with staff, and with you as an unfamiliar adult. Do they make eye contact and greet you? Do they seem relaxed and confident or anxious? Are they kind to each other in the corridors? Student behaviour in unstructured moments tells you more about a school's culture than any mission statement.

How Teachers Interact with Students

Walk past a classroom. Listen for 30 seconds. Is the teacher speaking at students or with them? Are questions welcomed? Is there laughter? A classroom where students look engaged, curious, and unafraid to raise their hand is a classroom where real learning is happening. A classroom where students look bored, anxious, or absent is a warning sign regardless of the school's reputation.

Whether the Labs Look Used or Unused

Open a Physics lab, a Biology lab, or a STEM Lab. Does it smell of chemicals and recent use, or of dust and neglect? Are there ongoing experiments, models, or student projects visible? Ask the guide: when did Grade 9 students last use this lab? Labs that exist for inspection purposes and labs that are used daily look and feel completely different.

📚
Check 4 of 15

The Library — Lived-In or Laminated?

A library that is genuinely used has a lived-in quality: books that have been touched, returned, and touched again; reading corners that show evidence of use; a librarian who knows students by name. A library where every book sits spine-out in perfect alphabetical order and the reading chairs look untouched is a library for display, not for reading.

The Sports Facilities — Space and Quality

Ask to see the sports grounds, courts, and pools. Are they maintained and appropriately sized for the number of students? Is there evidence of active use? At PGS, our 7.5-acre campus includes two swimming pools, full-sized football and cricket grounds, basketball and volleyball courts, lawn tennis courts, a skating rink, and a Table Tennis facility — all in active daily use.

Group 2 of 3 — Residential Facilities (For Boarding School Visitors)

Check 6 of 15

The Dining Hall — for Residential School Visits

If you are considering a residential school, the dining hall is as important as the classroom. Visit during or just after a meal time if possible. Is the food being served fresh? Does it smell good? Is the serving area clean? Speak with a few residential students informally: how is the food? The honest answer from a 12-year-old is worth more than any nutritionist certificate on the wall.

🛏️
Check 7 of 15

The Hostel Facilities — for Residential School Visits

Ask to see a boarding house room. Is it clean, well-ventilated, and appropriately furnished — individual beds, study tables, storage space? Are the washrooms well-maintained? Most importantly, ask to meet a house parent. Their warmth, experience, and genuine interest in students matters enormously.

Group 3 of 3 — Practical Checks & Parent Instinct
👩‍🏫
Check 8 of 15

Classroom Size vs Number of Students

Count the desks. Ask how many students are in a typical class. A classroom set up for 30 students but housing 45 is a red flag — regardless of how impressive the projector equipment is. A student-teacher ratio above 35:1 is difficult to justify in any school claiming personalised education. PGS maintains a 30:1 ratio.

🔒
Check 9 of 15

Safety Infrastructure — Not Just CCTV Cameras

Ask specifically: how are visitors logged and verified? Are fire exits clearly marked and unobstructed? Are school buses GPS-tracked with trained attendants on board? What is the on-campus medical facility? Is there a trained nurse? Good safety infrastructure is systematic and documented — not improvised.

The Notice Boards and Corridor Displays

School corridor displays reveal what the school actually values. Are the displays student-made or professionally printed? Do they celebrate academic toppers only, or also sports achievements, arts, community work, and character? A school whose walls celebrate only examination rank holders is communicating a narrow view of what children are for.

How the Admissions Team Answers Your Hard Questions

Ask: What were your Grade 10 board results last year? What is the actual student-teacher ratio? Can I see the lab being used? Watch how they respond. Do they answer directly and specifically, or deflect and generalise? Honesty and directness from an admissions team is a reliable indicator of the school's broader culture.

👪

Whether You Can Speak with Current Parents

Ask if the school can connect you with one or two current parents willing to speak candidly. A school that is genuinely confident in parent satisfaction will facilitate this readily. A school that deflects or offers only the same two "ambassador" parents every time is managing its reputation rather than demonstrating it.

🚌
Check 13 of 15

Transport Routes and Bus Quality

Ask to see a bus. Is it air-conditioned? Is it clearly maintained? Ask about GPS tracking and the attendant policy. Find out the pick-up time for your area. A bus that picks up at 6:30 AM for an 8:00 AM school start is an exhausting daily reality for young children.

👦
Check 14 of 15

Your Child's Reaction

Pay close attention to your child's reaction. Do they light up when they see the swimming pool? Do they seem interested in the library? A child's instinctive response to a campus environment is not infallible — but it is real data. A child who is visibly uncomfortable is telling you something worth listening to.

How You Feel When You Leave

Trust your instincts as a parent. After the tour is done and you are walking back to your car — how do you feel? Excited? Reassured? Uncertain? The best school campus visits leave parents feeling genuinely confident, not just temporarily impressed. If something felt off during the visit, dig into what it was before making your decision.
