The transition from pre-primary to Grade 1 is one of the most significant milestones in a child's educational journey.

For many children, it marks the first experience of formal academics, a new classroom community, and the beginning of structured learning that will continue for the next eleven years. For parents, it brings a mix of pride, anticipation, and the very practical question: how do I make sure my child is ready?
This guide is written for parents in Hyderabad whose children are preparing to begin Grade 1 at a CBSE school in the 2026-27 academic year. We cover both what schools look for in a Grade 1 admission assessment, and — more importantly — how to genuinely prepare your child for the experience of school, not just the interview.
What Schools Look for in Grade 1 Admissions

What Schools Look for in Grade 1 Admissions

At most good CBSE schools in Hyderabad, the Grade 1 admission process involves a brief, friendly interaction or readiness assessment. Schools are not looking for miniature academics — they are looking for social readiness and a basic developmental foundation.

🗣️

Communication Ability

Can the child express themselves in simple English or their home language? Do they make eye contact and respond to questions?

📖

Basic Literacy

Letter and number recognition, simple phonics awareness, ability to write their own name.

🔢

Basic Numeracy

Counting to 20, identifying numbers, basic shapes and colours.

🤝

Social Behaviour

Does the child interact reasonably with strangers? Do they show basic manners and composure?

✏️

Physical Readiness

Fine motor skills — can they hold a pencil and draw basic shapes? Gross motor coordination.

😊

Emotional Readiness

Can they separate from parents without extreme distress? Some initial separation anxiety is normal.

6 Practical Ways to Prepare Your Child for Grade 1
1

📚 Build a Reading Habit Early

Read to and with your child every day — not just school books, but picture books, story books, and anything that sparks their interest. Children who are read to regularly enter Grade 1 with larger vocabularies, better comprehension skills, and a positive emotional association with learning.

2

🗣️ Practise Conversations in English

Most CBSE schools in Hyderabad use English as the primary medium of instruction. If your child is not already comfortable conversing in English, begin simple daily conversations at home: naming objects, describing their day, asking and answering simple questions. Comfort with English significantly reduces anxiety on the first day of school.

3

✏️ Develop Writing Readiness with Fun Activities

Before formal writing begins, children benefit from activities that strengthen the fine motor muscles needed for writing: drawing, colouring within lines, cutting with child-safe scissors, threading beads, and playing with clay or playdough. Avoid forcing formal letter-writing before the child is developmentally ready — it creates anxiety rather than confidence.

4

🗓️ Practise a School-Like Routine at Home

The transition from the relaxed pre-primary day to the structured school day can be jarring for children used to following their own rhythm. Three to four weeks before school begins, introduce a consistent daily routine: a set wake-up time, breakfast together, a learning time of 30–45 minutes, physical activity, and a rest period. This primes the child's biological clock and reduces the shock of the school schedule.

5

🏫 Visit the School Campus Before Admission Day

Unfamiliar environments create anxiety in young children. A campus visit before the formal first day of school — where your child sees the classrooms, meets a teacher, explores the playground, and has lunch in the dining hall if possible — dramatically reduces first-day anxiety. Most schools, including PGS, actively encourage pre-admission campus visits for exactly this reason.

🏫 At PGS, we welcome prospective Grade 1 families for guided campus visits. Contact our admissions team at +91 9393778778 to arrange yours.

❤️ Talk About School Positively — Without False Promises

Children absorb parental anxiety instantly. Speak about school with genuine enthusiasm: "You will learn so many amazing things! You will make new friends! Your teacher sounds wonderful!" Avoid bribing or minimising anxieties. Acknowledge the emotion with empathy and redirect to positive anticipation: "It feels new and a little scary — that is completely normal. And you are going to do great."
